Inkhosi a day in the life and home of a child in an informal settlement
I wake up at 4am in the morning to go to school.My parents are dead so I live with my siblings and my gogo. My gogo is ill so take care of her.I walk to school and they feed me.I can’t afford food for home.Teachers hand out books I share my books with 5 kids.I get home at 6pm and I cook dinner for my sisters, brother and my gogo. I have three sisters and one brother. My parents died because they walk across the street and got hit by a car. My siblings are so heartbroken. Since I’m the eldest I’ve got take care of my gogo and siblings. Every second afternoon I go and fetch water for the house. Life is hard to balance between being a parent and going to school. My gogo said if it’s to hard I must drop out of school but I don’t want to I love school. I try to do homework when everyone is asleep. If I really can’t see I find the nearest lamppost.
